Light Bulbs

A while ago, [personal profile] wescobear posted about the upcoming regulations regarding the phase out of certain types of incandescent lamps (bulbs).  I saw this article in the New York Times a day ago, and it's a pretty good explanation of what to expect.  Turns out that incandescent bulbs are NOT going away, they just have to be more efficient.  However, as other means of producing light get better, such as fluorescent and LED, I'll make the swtich, if only for the savings in energy costs.  We are definitely in the process of changing over at our off the grid Mendocino place, as we really need to watch the battery drain in the winter.

You made need to copy and paste the link.

Finally, a clear article about the light bulb change over. May I offer some advice since your situation is unique among my online friends? I've had good luck with both the Philips and the Home Depot house brand LED replacement lamps. I've installed two of the Home Depot LED downlight converters; they're 10.5W, contain a Cree LED chip and they're shockingly bright. I haven't been able to find any outdoor LED fixtures which were low enough wattage, so I used incandescent fixtures and screw in 8.5W LED converters. Bonus! LEDs don't emit UV, so my outdoor lighting no longer attracts insects. There are also some really good Philips LED T8 fluorescent lamp replacements, but they're pricey at $55 wholesale for a four footer.

No, the New York Times is lying!

I need to horde 100 watt bulbs now!

Don't worry; you can already find 72W and 73W replacement incandescent lamps (for 100W) in a few stores.

It's funny how many people think that incandescents are being outlawed. There have been a number of news stories, both in print and on TV that state the correct story. Sometimes the internet is a bane ...
